Kurzbeschrieb: Satellite images play an important role in the job market (especially in STEM), society and science. Across Europe, the use of satellite images is demanded by curricula, but there is a gap to classroom practice, where they are often not used, especially beyond simply looking at e.g. true color printed images. Consequently, it is important that pre- and in-service teachers are trained in that area. Within the project, educational design research will be used to develop a variety of outputs (e.g. curriculum, learning modules dealing with human-environment interactions in the context of environmental issues) and training events with teachers will be conducted.

 

Satellite images are important for society and the job market (especially in STEM), as well as for (education for) sustainable development. Moreover, the use of satellite images is demanded by curricula across Europe, including the Swiss curriculum 21.

However, teachers often only use satellite images in classroom practice by simply looking at true-color image print-outs or doing a simple search in Google Earth, thus not exploiting the educational potential of satellite images.

Consequently, the project objectives are

  • to improve teachers’ and students’ competences in using satellite images
  • to improve teachers’ and students’ awareness of an interest in jobs that use remote sensing, especially in STEM
  • help students to learn about local and European human-environment interactions in the context of environmental issues

To achieve that, the YCHANGE-project will:

  • develop a curriculum for remote sensing in schools (grades 5 to 12/13) as a guideline for teachers
  • develop ready-to-use remote sensing learning materials as well as learning concepts that help teachers design their own materials
  • facilitate the creation of a web-map on human-induced environmental changes and their consequences, developed based on student submissions and expert comments
  • conduct face-to-face multiplier/training-events with teachers
  • create webinars (video tutorials) for teachers
  • conduct accompanying research & evaluation

All the outputs as well the BLIF online educational software and project information will be accessible via a to be developed web-platform, which serves as the project hub.
